Sobriety and Healthy Diet

Healthy WordsWhy is it so important to maintain a healthy diet while in luxury rehab programs and in maintenance for a lasting non 12 step rehab sobriety program. The majority of people who suffer from substance abuse problems have very poor diets or are in some cases are none existing. Some addicts may also choose to spend most if not all of their money on drugs and or alcohol, leaving next to nothing to pay for nutritious foods like lean proteins, fruits and vegetables. If you are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, it’s important to maintain a healthy diet, as it will support sober living in a variety of ways.

Substance Abuse and Nutrition, there is a very clear link between poor nutrition and substance abuse. Healthy foods contain nutrients, the nourishing substances that give your body the ability to recoup the materials and information it needs to function well. With this lack of important nutrients can have a detrimental effect on metabolic processes occurring in your body. In contrast, getting too much food or very unhealthy processed foods gives your body all the wrong signals. Some of these negative signals that may occurred while ingesting foods on opiates and substances come from the intake of processed foods. Processed foods such as Chicken Nuggets, White Rice, French Fries, Canned Fruit in Heavy Syrup, Chips, Soda, Foods with High-Fructose Corn Syrup and Processed Meats can make you overweight and undernourished at the same time. Furthermore, the combination of substance abuse and high consumption or lack thereof of unhealthy foods raises your risk of developing diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and arthritis.

Just some of the negative effects substance abuse may have on your body without healthy nutrition.

  • Opiate addiction: can cause diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, which all lead to nutrient deficiencies and electrolyte imbalances and tend to be low in calcium, vitamins D and B6, and iron
  • Alcohol abuse: damages the liver and the pancreas. This results in an imbalance of calories, fluids, protein, and electrolytes. Alcohol abuse can also result in B1, B6, and folic acid deficiencies, which can cause problems with the nervous system and anemia. Alcohol abusers frequently suffer from high blood pressure, malnutrition, and diabetes. Alcohol generally causes the body to burn out a lot more nutrients than other triggers.
  • Cocaine or methamphetamine abuse can: cause rapid weight loss, dehydration, and memory loss and they usually are omega-3 fatty acids deficient.
