What Is Holistic Rehab?

AToN’s holistic rehab is an integrative medicine that addresses all aspects of a person’s life, including the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. By considering the mind, body, and spirit, holistic healers strive to achieve balance and harmony among these interconnected elements. Unlike Western medicine, which often focuses on disease symptoms, holistic healing seeks to identify and address the root causes of symptoms, promoting overall health and well-being.

In holistic addiction treatment programs, practitioners emphasize the reactivation of the body’s innate capacity for self-healing. This involves various alternative therapies that aim to bring the body-mind-spirit system back into balance, such as calming and healing the nervous system, restoring the body’s natural rhythms, and cultivating physical, mental, and emotional equilibrium.

What is Holistic Addiction Treatment?

Holistic addiction treatment is an alternative approach to traditional medicine. Holistic approaches are often used in combination with other addiction treatment options such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication-assisted treatment. Holistic treatment modalities offered at AToN Center include breathing and stress reduction techniques, yoga and meditation, massage therapy, acupuncture, personal training, and guided imagery.

Some guiding principles of holistic addiction treatment include:

  • Paying attention to diet and nutrition—being mindful of the quality of food and drink that one ingests.
  • Supporting digestive health via taking good care of the microbiome—the healthy microflora in the gut.
  • Taking good care of the environment—the water, soil, and air that a human body depends upon.
  • Enjoying regular exercise, along with periods of deep relaxation.
  • Getting plenty of fresh air and natural light.
  • Getting an appropriate amount of sleep.

Types of Holistic Therapies

There are many types of holistic therapies. Most activities that help individuals connect to their mind, body, and spirit can be considered holistic therapy. Our holistic healers at the AToN Center can provide these types of holistic addiction treatments:

Breathing and stress reduction uses breathing techniques to bring down anxiety levels. AToN Center offers individual therapy sessions to teach breathing and stress reduction methods.

Yoga and meditation can provide immense benefits for those in recovery for substance use disorder. This activity has been known to reduce anxiety, improve focus, and even help people learn how to control their cravings.

Massage therapy involves the skilled manipulation of muscles, tissues, and body structures by a trained massage therapist with the purpose of alleviating physical and psychological symptoms that the use of drugs or alcohol can cause. Massage therapy for addiction also promotes relaxation, stress reduction, and overall well-being for the recipient.

Acupuncture for addiction treatment is an effective method for helping individuals sustain long-term sobriety. This treatment approach stimulates the central nervous system which stabilizes dopamine levels, improves sleep and energy, and contributes to the detox process.

Personal training allows our residents to work individually with our personal trainer in order to incorporate fitness and exercise into their recovery plan. AToN takes into account that each of our residents has unique needs and requirements regarding exercise and often benefits from an individualized format.

Guided imagery therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses visualization and imagination to help patients achieve certain goals, such as reducing stress, managing emotions, and coping with physical symptoms. The therapist will work with the individual to create a mental image of a positive outcome or goal related to their addiction struggle.

Are Holistic Therapies Effective for Treating Substance Use Disorder?

Holistic therapies are effective treatments for a variety of health conditions and disorders, including drug or alcohol addiction. Holistic treatments offered at AToN promote self-awareness and relaxation. Massage therapy, acupuncture, and personal training help resolve physical problems. This is one reason these methods are used in our addiction treatment programs; these help heal physical health that may deteriorate as a result of drug or alcohol use.

Holistic methods such as guided imagery and meditation have been successful in substance use disorder treatment, especially for preventing relapse. At our California rehab center, we encourage residents to try multiple forms of holistic addiction treatment to experience the healing power of each. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health oversees and conducts a wide variety of research on the efficacy of holistic healing methods. The bottom line is that complementary, integrative, and holistic healing methods effectively resolve various health concerns.

What To Expect in Our Holistic Treatment Program

In the true spirit of holistic healing, AToN Center recognizes that no single therapeutic modality can effectively meet the needs of every person. Therefore, our team provides various modalities to meet each resident’s unique needs.

This integrated treatment model offers the best opportunity for residents to find their optimal path to recovery. With the support of AToN’s holistic rehab services, individuals recovering from addiction learn how to bring balance to their bodies and minds; and live with a higher purpose.

Residents at AToN Center enjoy unlimited group holistic activities such as sound bowl healing, breathwork, yoga, meditation, hiking, and painting class. In addition, each resident can schedule three individual Holistic Treatment sessions per week. Residents are allowed to choose which therapies to receive, but our team will also recommend which treatments are most appropriate for addressing the individual’s needs.

Each form of holistic addiction treatment available at our California rehab has elements unique to the type of therapy it is, but there are several things you can expect in every session. Our holistic healers can tailor sessions to the resident and to fit their individualized treatment plan. Communication is critical to the success of a session so our team encourages open conversations about how to improve treatment for the individual. Our residents can always expect the highest level of care and respect from our addiction programs and staff members.

BENEFITS OF HOLISTIC HEALING

There are many benefits to receiving holistic addiction treatment at the AToN center. These include stabilization, aid in detoxification, and relapse prevention.

holistic treatment benefits in California

Holistic treatments, such as acupuncture, meditation, and yoga, can stabilize individuals and support them during the detox process. They do this by increasing and balancing brain chemicals, whose production is disrupted by drug and alcohol use. These approaches help alleviate withdrawal symptoms and rebalance the body’s energy.

Meditation and yoga reduce stress, enhance mindfulness, and cultivate self-awareness, aiding in emotional regulation. This is beneficial for our dual diagnosis program where we treat individuals who suffer from substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorders. These therapies are effective in helping one connect to their body and quiet their mind, which can aid in treating anxiety, depression, and trauma disorders. Holistic treatments foster relaxation, self-care, and a sense of connection, which can be instrumental in stabilizing individuals and promoting their recovery.

Since holistic addiction treatment provides techniques to heal a person as a whole, rather than treating individual symptoms of drug and alcohol misuse, this approach may lead to a more successful and long-term recovery. To heal the mind, body, and spirit of an individual, our holistic addiction treatment addresses mental and physical health. Holistic treatment complements dual diagnosis treatment and strengthens the mind and body. This makes it possible to retain coping strategies and stick to relapse prevention planning that our team does in our aftercare program.

Above all, holistic healing is about treating the whole person. It’s about noticing how different factors of human experience affect one another—and nourishing harmony and balance among them. Each of these facets contributes to its power and effectiveness:

  • An emphasis on the prevention of illness and injury.
  • Activation of the body’s innate ability to heal itself.
  • Transforming anxiety into balance and vitality.
  • An acknowledgment of the body-mind connection (i.e., the authentic healing power of the so-called “placebo effect”).
  • Acknowledging the importance of a positive attitude and outlook.
  • Welcoming the integration of different healing systems.
  • Individualized attention to each person’s unique circumstances.
  • Resident empowerment: active participation in their healing.
  • A humanized relationship between practitioner and resident—with mutual respect and open communication.
  • Harnessing the power of mother nature, e.g., using herbs and flower essences.
  • Seeing injury or illness as a growth opportunity rather than a punishment.
  • Harnessing the power of genuine caring, kindness, and compassion.
  • Healers who “walk their talk,” i.e., who teach by example.
