When one transitions from active addiction into recovery there is an amount of loss and gain that is happening. As we allow the loss to take place, we honor all that is lost, make meaning out of the situation, and try not to judge ourselves or our feelings. In doing so, we make room for much to be gained.
Going through the 5 stages of grief, denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance, helps us to process and identify where we are and where we need to go.
This is not an easy task but one worth the effort if we want to find true freedom from addiction.
When we allow for the loss we make room for the gain. Much like breathing, in with the new, out with the old.
Learning not to fight the process is only the beginning.
