AToN Center Designated as a
Blue Distinction® Center
To assist patients struggling with substance use disorders in finding compassionate and high-quality treatment on-site and virtually, BlueCross BlueShield of California has recognized AToN Center as a Blue Distinction® Center for Substance Use Treatment and Recovery.
AToN Center, which provides exceptional care through residential and aftercare treatment, is one of the first facilities to earn this designation under the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program.
What are Blue Distinction Centers?
Blue Distinction® Centers are facilities recognized for their distinguished clinical care and processes by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. This prestigious designation is awarded based on rigorous, evidence-based criteria and input from expert physicians and medical organizations.
The aim is to help members of Blue’s health plans and others find consistent, high-quality specialty care while encouraging healthcare professionals to enhance the overall quality and delivery of care nationwide.

Criteria for Blue Distinction
The selection criteria for the Blue Distinction Centers for Substance Use Treatment and Recovery program involve a comprehensive evaluation of structure, process, and outcome measures.
Developed with input from physician experts and medical organizations, these criteria aim to reduce the fragmentation often seen in substance use disorder care.
Recognized facilities must offer care in various settings, including residential, inpatient, intensive outpatient, or partial hospitalization services. For opioid use disorder, medication-assisted treatment (MAT) must be available, combining medications with evidence-based psychosocial therapies.
Impact of Blue Distinction Specialty Care Program
Since 2006, the Blue Distinction Specialty Care program has helped patients find quality specialty care in areas such as bariatric surgery, cancer care, cardiac care, cellular immunotherapy, fertility care, gene therapy, knee and hip replacements, maternity care, spine surgery, substance use treatment and recovery, and transplants while encouraging health care professionals to improve their care delivery.
Research indicates that Blue Distinction® Centers demonstrate better outcomes and lower costs for specific procedures than non-designated facilities.

About Blue Distinction Centers
Blue Distinction Centers (BDC) meet overall quality measures developed with input from the medical community. Local Blue Plans may require additional criteria for providers located in their service area; for details, contact your Local Blue Plan. Blue Distinction Centers+ (BDC+) also meet cost measures that address consumers’ need for affordable healthcare.
Each provider’s cost of care is evaluated using data from its Local Blue Plan. Providers in CA, ID, NY, PA, and WA may lie in two Local Blue Plans’ areas, resulting in two evaluations for cost of care; their own Local Blue Plans decide whether one or both cost of care evaluations must meet BDC+ national criteria.
